Raw materials are often delivered in drums and have to be fed into the production process. With bulky drums weighing 50 kg and more, the question of efficient, ergonomic and economical handling during emptying arises. It must also be safe and the material and its dust must not be released into the environment.
This was precisely the challenge faced by one of our customers. The German production site of an international chemical group was unable to find a suitable solution on the market and turned to VOLKMANN. We designed and built a drum tipping and emptying station, which we would like to present here in words, pictures and video.
The drum tipping and emptying station can be used flexibly for different tasks. One operating mode is the emptying of drums of different sizes weighing up to 120 kg.
The station is also used for manual emptying of sacks. The resulting dust is collected by the dust hood with integrated connection for an on-site extraction system.
A third operating mode is the emptying of big bags. To do this, the dust hood must be changed at the station, which can be done in just a few minutes thanks to the quick-release fasteners.
The drum tipping and emptying station is used by the customer to feed a mixer. The station is installed directly above the mixer so that the material enters the mixer gravimetrically. However, the station can also be used as a feeding station for vacuum conveying in order to overcome greater distances and height differences.
The station enables low-dust emptying of drums and bags. However, it is not a ‘containment’ or hermetic seal to prevent dust from escaping. For our customers and the materials they handle, the dust hood with the extraction system provides adequate protection against excessive dust concentrations in the environment while at the same time offering a high degree of flexibility for the containers used. Further measures and the associated costs were therefore not required.
This drum tipping and emptying station developed for a customer is a good example of a customised solution from VOLKMANN. This station is not a standard product with a few minor modifications. We designed, developed and manufactured a completely new machine for this task.
We took the opportunity to film the station in action before delivery. Even though it was only a test run with an empty drum, the video shows the functionality quite well.

More InformationThe station has been in use at the customer’s premises for several weeks now, where it is being used intensively and has already proved its worth in daily practice. This has also led to further optimisation ideas, which we will implement together with the customer.
